What types of wood should you choose for sustainable outdoor furniture?
The choice of wood for outdoor furniture is essential to guarantee aesthetics, durability and environmental sustainability. Many species are suited to outdoor conditions, but not all have the same ecological impact.
Since 2020, Azur Confort has taken the audacious step of abandoning exotic woods and turning exclusively to European species, which are more respectful of the environment. Discover the advantages and specific features of the five popular types of wood used for outdoor furniture, and why Robinia, Chestnut and Beech are sustainable alternatives to exotic species.
Exotic wood species: between resistance and environmental impact
Teak
Emblematic of outdoor furniture, teak wood is appreciated for its density, durability and noble appearance. However, its exploitation poses serious environmental problems, in particular deforestation in South-East Asia and high carbon footprint transport by sea.
Iroko
Native to West and Central Africa, the iroko is a dense, durable wood, often compared to teak because of its resistance to weather and insects. Although it is more accessible than teak, its exploitation is responsible for the over-exploitation and deforestation of African forests.
Robinia: a sustainable European alternative
Native to Europe, Robinia (often called ‘false acacia’) is one of the most durable woods for outdoor use. It is naturally resistant to weather, fungi and insects, without the need for chemical treatments.
Why choose Robinia?
- Exceptional durability comparable to exotic woods
- Natural resistance to external aggression, avoiding the use of chemical products
- Local production, promoting the European economy and reducing the carbon footprint
- Wood from sustainably managed forests, helping to preserve ecosystems

Chestnut: a robust and eco-friendly wood
Another European species favoured by Azur Confort, chestnut is a wood appreciated for its robustness and great resistance to outdoor conditions. Naturally rich in tannins, it repels insects and fungi, making it ideal for outdoor use.
The advantages of chestnut :
- Excellent resistance to fungi and insects without the need for chemical treatments
- Rapid growth and sustainable forest management, ensuring that natural resources are exploited with respect
- The nobility of its clear, uniform colour
- Local production and a reduced carbon footprint, unlike imported species
Beech: a versatile and aesthetic wood
Beech is a European wood known for its strength and fine grain. Although mainly used for interior furnishings, it is also suitable for outdoor use when properly treated. We chose beech for our ESTIU collection with its exclusive lacquer finish that covers the wood completely.
Why opt for beech?
- A strong, robust wood
- Excellent impregnating capacity for effective protective treatments
- A local and sustainable resource, supporting Europe’s forestry economy

Why choose European woods for outdoor furniture?
In 2020, Azur Confort took the strong decision to abandon exotic woods in order to fully commit to an eco-responsible approach. By choosing European species such as Robinia, Chestnut and Beech, Azur Confort is proving that it is possible to combine aesthetics, durability and ecological commitment. These species offer an excellent alternative to exotic woods, while helping to protect forests and reduce the carbon impact of outdoor furniture.
